Spain Digital Nomad Visa for Colombian nationals — the complete 2026 guide
Colombia has a deep connection with Spain — and Spain has one of the world's largest Colombian communities. Colombian nationals require a Schengen visa to enter Spain, so the consulate route (Spanish Embassy Bogotá or consulates in Medellín, Cali, or Barranquilla) is the primary application path. Many Colombians also have Spanish ancestry or residency that may offer alternative routes.
Colombian applicants
Colombian nationals and Spain's DNV
Spain hosts a very large Colombian community and has a special cultural and historical relationship with Colombia. Colombian nationals must check several things before applying for the DNV: (1) Do they already have Spanish residency or citizenship through family? (2) Do they have an EU passport through another route? If not, the DNV is the path. Four Spanish posts in Colombia make the consulate route accessible.
Do you already have EU rights?
A significant number of Colombians have Spanish ancestry, EU family members, or prior Spanish residency. Before applying for the DNV, confirm whether you already have or can obtain Spanish citizenship or long-term residency through family ties. Spain's Ley de Memoria Democrática does not extend to Colombian nationals in the same way as to Argentines — but bilateral agreements and naturalisation paths through residency exist. Your case manager can help assess your situation.
Colombian certificate — one of the fastest
Colombia's Certificado de Antecedentes Judiciales from the Policía Nacional is downloadable almost immediately online at policia.gov.co. The apostille from the Cancillería takes 5–10 business days. Total turnaround: approximately 1–2 weeks — one of the fastest criminal record + apostille processes in the DNV application.
Colombians in the UK or USA — UGE route may be available
Colombian nationals who are residents of countries with Schengen visa-free access — such as the UK (with British citizenship) or USA (with US nationality) — may be able to use the UGE route. Colombian nationals with only a Colombian passport require a Schengen visa for the UGE route. Contact us to discuss your specific documents.
Application routes
Consulate or UGE — the two routes to Spain's DNV
Colombia passport holders require a Schengen tourist/visit visa to enter Spain. This means the UGE route requires an extra step — obtain a Schengen visa first, then enter Spain and apply. Most applicants from Colombia find the consulate route more straightforward. Apply at Spanish Embassy Bogotá, Consulate General Medellín, Consulate General Cali, Consulate General Barranquilla in Colombia before travelling to Spain.
Spanish Embassy / Consulate in Colombia
Spanish Embassy Bogotá, Consulate General Medellín, Consulate General Cali, Consulate General Barranquilla

UGE — requires Schengen visa first
Obtain a Schengen visa, enter Spain, apply via UGE
- ✓ Faster processing once in Spain (~20 working days)
- ✓ 3-year permit issued directly
- – Schengen visa required before entering Spain
- – Additional step vs consulate route
Criminal record certificate
Police certificate requirements for Colombian nationals
All DNV applicants must provide a criminal record certificate apostilled or legalised for international use. For Colombian nationals, the required certificate is the Certificado de Antecedentes Judiciales.
Policía Nacional de Colombia — apply online at policia.gov.co
Apply online at policia.gov.co for a Certificado de Antecedentes Judiciales. Processing is typically immediate or within 1–3 business days. The certificate is downloadable as a PDF. If outside Colombia, apply via the Colombian Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence.
Certifying for use in Spain
Colombia is a member of the Hague Convention. Apostilles on Colombian documents are issued by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores (Cancillería de Colombia). Apply online via cancilleria.gov.co. Allow 5–10 business days. The apostilled certificate is required for your DNV application.
Allow 1–2 weeks total (PONAL certificate + Cancillería apostille)
The police certificate is frequently the longest lead-time document in a DNV application. Apply for it as early as possible — your case manager will advise on optimal timing to avoid delays to your submission.
