Applying for Spain from Norway

Spain is an increasingly popular destination for remote workers.

🌍

Who Is This Page For?

This page is for non-EU/non-EEA nationals living in Norway — Americans, Canadians, Australians, Indians, and others — who want to move to Spain on a Digital Nomad Visa. Norwegian and EEA/EU nationals do not need the DNV.

📋

Your Route Options

Norway is a Schengen member. If your passport allows Schengen visa-free travel (e.g., USA, UK, Canada, Australia), you can fly to Spain and apply at the UGE directly. Alternatively, apply at the Spanish Embassy in Oslo before leaving Norway.

💡

A note for Norway nationals

Norwegian nationals and EEA/EU citizens do not need the Spain DNV — EEA free movement applies. This page is for non-EU/non-EEA nationals with legal residency in Norway.

Consulate or UGE — the two routes to Spain's DNV

Whether you can use the UGE route depends on your passport nationality. If your home country passport is Schengen visa-free, you can enter Spain and apply directly via UGE (approximately 20 working days). If your passport requires a Schengen visa, the consulate route through the Spanish Embassy in the country is required. The Spanish Embassy in the country and its consular network handle DNV applications for non-EU residents in Norway.

Police certificate requirements for non-EU nationals in Norway

All DNV applicants must provide a criminal record certificate apostilled or legalised for international use. The certificate type depends on your passport nationality.

Apply

relevant national authority

Apply for a Politiattest (police certificate) via the Norwegian Police online application (politiet.no) or at a police station. For international use, request a 'politiattest for bruk i utlandet'. The certificate is issued free of charge and typically arrives within 1–2 weeks.

Apostille / Legalisation

Certifying for use in Spain

Norway is a Hague Convention member. Apostilles for Norwegian police certificates are issued by the County Governor (Statsforvalter) in your region. Submit your original Politiattest to your local Statsforvalter office for apostille.

Start early

Allow Politiattest: 1–2 weeks. Apostille from Statsforvalter: 1–2 weeks. Sworn Spanish translation: 5–7 days. Allow 4–6 weeks for Norway-side documents.

The police certificate is frequently the longest lead-time document in a DNV application. Apply for it as early as possible — your case manager will advise on optimal timing to avoid delays to your submission.

Popular cities and practical tips for people moving from Norway

Oslo-based expats moving to Spain often choose the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria, Tenerife) — a long-established Norwegian holiday destination that has become a remote work hub. Barcelona and Valencia are popular with Oslo's tech community. Málaga offers the fastest-growing digital nomad infrastructure on the mainland.

Tax planning

Tax implications for non-EU nationals from Norway

Once you become Spanish tax resident (183+ days in Spain in a calendar year), you file IRPF in Spain. A double taxation treaty between Spain and Norway prevents being taxed on the same income twice. Specialist cross-border tax advice is recommended before making the move.

Practical

Banking and finances

Norway's high salaries make the DNV income threshold very easy to meet. Norwegian employer contracts and skattemelding (tax returns) are excellent income evidence. Documents in Norwegian require sworn Spanish translations. Norway's oil sector and large international employer base mean many applicants are global professionals. Wise handles NOK-to-EUR efficiently. Direct flights from Oslo/Bergen to Barcelona, Madrid, and Málaga are frequent.
