Moving to Spain from Thailand

Spain is an increasingly popular destination for remote workers.

🌏

Your Route

Thai passport holders require a Schengen visa to enter Spain. The standard route is a consulate application at the Spanish Embassy in Bangkok. Applications are assessed by the UGE in Madrid regardless of route.

📋

Legalisation Chain

Thailand is not a Hague member. Your Royal Thai Police clearance must be legalised: Royal Thai Police HQ → Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Legalisation Division) → Spanish Embassy attestation in Bangkok.

💡

A note for Thailand nationals

Thailand is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. The full legalisation chain takes 8–12 weeks. Do not book flights until all original legalised documents are in hand.

Consulate or UGE — the two routes to Spain's DNV

Thailand passport holders require a Schengen tourist/visit visa to enter Spain. This means the UGE route requires an extra step — obtain a Schengen visa first, then enter Spain and apply. Most applicants from Thailand find the consulate route more straightforward. Apply at the Spanish Embassy in your country in Thailand before travelling to Spain.

Police certificate requirements for Thailand nationals

All DNV applicants must provide a criminal record certificate apostilled or legalised for international use. For Thailand nationals, the required certificate is the Thai Police Clearance Certificate (หนังสือรับรองความประพฤติ).

Apply

relevant national authority

Apply for a Police Clearance Certificate at the Immigration Division 1, Royal Thai Police HQ (Pathum Wan, Bangkok). Foreign residents in Thailand apply here; Thai nationals abroad must apply via the Thai Embassy in their country of residence. Fee: approximately THB 100.

Apostille / Legalisation

Certifying for use in Spain

1. Obtain cert from Royal Thai Police HQ. 2. Legalise at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Legalisation Division (Consular Affairs Department, Chaeng Watthana). 3. Present to the Spanish Embassy in Bangkok for consular attestation. Bring originals and copies at each stage.

Start early

Allow Police cert: 15–30 working days. MFA legalisation: 2–5 working days. Spanish Embassy attestation: 1–2 weeks. Sworn Spanish translation: 5–10 days. Allow 10–14 weeks total.

The police certificate is frequently the longest lead-time document in a DNV application. Apply for it as early as possible — your case manager will advise on optimal timing to avoid delays to your submission.

Popular cities and practical tips for Thailand nationals in Spain

Bangkok-based professionals moving to Europe often choose Madrid for its pace and cosmopolitan feel. Chiang Mai remote workers frequently gravitate to Valencia or Palma for the warm climate at lower cost. Barcelona's creative scene draws Thai designers and tech talent.

Tax planning

Tax implications for Thailand nationals

Once you become Spanish tax resident (183+ days in Spain in a calendar year), you file IRPF in Spain. A double taxation treaty between Spain and Thailand prevents being taxed on the same income twice. Specialist cross-border tax advice is recommended before making the move.

Practical
