Moving to Spain from the UAE — the DNV guide for UAE residents

From UAE residency to Spanish residency — what changes

UAE residency is typically tied to employment — if you lose your job or change employer, your UAE visa status changes. Spain's Digital Nomad Visa offers a more stable, portable form of legal residency, renewable up to 5 years, without being tied to a single employer.

Visa stability

Residency not tied to an employer

Unlike UAE work visas, Spain's DNV is held by you personally. It is not tied to a specific employer — you can work for multiple clients or change employer during the validity period, as long as you continue to meet the income and remote-work criteria. This is a significant structural difference for UAE expats.

Earnings

UAE salaries clear the threshold

UAE-based professionals in finance, tech, legal, and corporate roles are typically high earners. The DNV income minimum of €2,849/month is modest for most UAE expat salaries. AED income is fully accepted — your case manager will help present your income documents for the Spanish authorities.

Proximity

Spain is approximately 6 hours by air

Dubai and Abu Dhabi have excellent direct connections to Madrid, Barcelona, and other Spanish cities. The timezone difference is modest (UAE is 3 hours ahead of Spain in winter, 2 hours in summer). This makes Spain particularly practical for UAE residents compared to more distant destinations.

UGE from Spain or via the Spanish Embassy/Consulate in UAE?

Your application route depends on your nationality. Many UAE residents — UK, US, Canadian, Australian nationals and others — can enter Spain visa-free and apply via the UGE. UAE nationals and some other nationalities may need a Schengen visa first to enter Spain for the UGE route.

From zero tax in the UAE to Spanish IRPF — model this carefully

The tax change is the single most important consideration for UAE residents moving to Spain. The UAE has no personal income tax. Spain has progressive income tax rates up to 47%. This is a very significant change — but Beckham Law can help qualifying workers substantially.

UAE side

No UAE income tax — no double taxation issue from UAE

The UAE has no personal income tax, so there is no double taxation issue from the UAE side when you become Spanish tax resident. There is no UAE income tax to be relieved under a Spain-UAE tax treaty. The tax change is entirely on the Spanish side — you go from paying zero income tax to paying Spanish IRPF rates.

Spanish side

Spanish IRPF — up to 47% on high incomes

After 183 days in Spain in a calendar year, you become Spanish tax resident and must file IRPF (Spanish income tax). Rates are progressive: approximately 19% on the first €12,450, rising to 47% on income above €300,000. For UAE residents used to zero tax, this requires careful financial modelling before committing to the move.

💡

Beckham Law — the key tax tool for UAE expats moving to Spain

Spain's Beckham Law (Régimen de Impatriados) allows qualifying employed workers who move to Spain to pay a flat 24% tax rate on Spanish-source income up to €600,000, rather than progressive IRPF rates. For UAE expats on employment contracts moving to Spain, this can be a significant advantage — reducing the effective tax rate substantially compared to standard IRPF. You must apply within 6 months of Social Security registration. Beckham Law advice is not included in our DNV service — consult a Spanish tax adviser. Not all DNV applicants qualify (it applies to employees, not most freelancers).

UAE apostille and criminal record for DNV applicants

UAE-issued documents may need apostille. For criminal record evidence, UAE residents typically use their home country police certificate rather than a UAE police clearance — your case manager will advise on what is required based on your nationality and application route.

UAE apostille

MOFAIC — now available since 2021

The UAE joined the Hague Convention in 2021, meaning apostilles on UAE-issued documents are now available. UAE apostilles are issued through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC). This applies to UAE-issued documents such as salary certificates, employment contracts, and company letters.

Criminal record

Home country certificate — not UAE police clearance

For most UAE residents, the required criminal record certificate is from your home country (UK ACRO, US FBI, RCMP for Canada, AFP for Australia, etc.) — apostilled in that country. A UAE police clearance certificate may be requested in addition for some routes — your case manager will confirm the exact requirement based on your nationality and chosen application route.

Spain DNV for UAE residents — FAQ

Yes. UAE residents — regardless of their nationality — can apply for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa. This page is specifically for people currently residing in the UAE who wish to apply for Spain's DNV. The income minimum is €2,849/month (200% of Spain's SMI 2026). Depending on your nationality, you may enter Spain visa-free and apply via the UGE, or apply at the Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Spanish Consulate in Dubai.
Yes. Income earned in the UAE (in AED or any other currency) is accepted as income evidence. You must demonstrate the equivalent of at least €2,849 per month. Bank statements and payslips in AED are fine — your case manager will help you present these documents in a way that clearly shows the EUR equivalent for the Spanish authorities.
The UAE has no personal income tax, so most UAE residents currently pay zero tax on their earnings. Moving to Spain means becoming a Spanish tax resident (after 183 days in Spain in a calendar year), at which point you file IRPF (Spanish income tax) returns and pay Spanish tax rates. This is a significant change — from zero to Spanish rates of up to 47% on high incomes. Beckham Law (24% flat rate for qualifying employed workers) can substantially reduce this burden. Model your tax position carefully before committing to the move.
Potentially yes, if you are employed under an employment contract and moving to Spain for work. Beckham Law (Régimen de Impatriados) taxes qualifying income at a flat 24% rate for the first year plus 5 additional years. To qualify, you must apply within 6 months of registering with Social Security in Spain and must not have been Spanish tax resident in the preceding 5 years. Beckham Law registration is not included in our DNV service — you will need a Spanish tax adviser.
It depends on your passport, not your UAE residency status. If you hold a UK, US, Canadian, Australian, or most European passport, you can enter Spain visa-free for up to 90 days and apply for the DNV via the UGE during that stay. UAE nationals (Emirati passport holders) also have visa-free access to the Schengen area, so can use the UGE route directly. Nationals of countries that require a Schengen visa — including many South Asian and African passports — must obtain a tourist/visitor Schengen visa before travelling to Spain to apply via UGE. We advise on the correct route during onboarding based on your nationality.
Your bank statements and payslips in AED are submitted as-is. We prepare a covering note explaining the EUR equivalent at the relevant exchange rate, using the European Central Bank reference rate. You are not required to convert your accounts to EUR — you simply need to demonstrate that your AED income is equivalent to at least €2,849/month at the time of application. Exchange rates fluctuate, so if you are close to the threshold, we recommend documenting 6 months of statements rather than 3 to show consistent income above the minimum.
Yes. Emirati nationals can apply for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa. UAE nationals have Schengen visa-free access, so can use the UGE route by entering Spain and applying locally — this is the faster option. Alternatively, the Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi processes applications from UAE nationals through the standard consulate route. The same income, employment, and document requirements apply regardless of nationality — the minimum is €2,849/month from a remote employer or self-employment outside Spain (with no more than 20% Spanish-source income).
If you are applying as an employed worker, you need a Spanish private health insurance policy covering Spain, with no co-payment (no excess or deductible), and a minimum coverage amount of €30,000. Your existing UAE or international health policy almost certainly does not qualify — it needs to be a Spain-specific policy from an insurer recognised by the Spanish authorities. If you are self-employed and registering as autónomo in Spain, you are covered by Spain's public health system via your RETA (Social Security) contributions and do not need a separate private policy. Our partner 247 Expat Insurance can provide a qualifying policy — speak to your case manager.
Yes. Spain's DNV allows you to include your spouse or partner and dependent children in the application. For each additional family member, the income threshold increases by approximately €1,069/month (75% of the 2026 SMI). So a couple applying together needs a primary applicant income of at least €3,918/month; a family of four needs approximately €6,056/month. Each family member also needs their own health insurance policy and their own apostilled documents. You can apply together or bring family members later through a family reunification process — applying together when everyone is ready is typically simpler.
Via the UGE route (applying from within Spain): document preparation typically takes 1–3 weeks, followed by ~20 working days of UGE processing. Total time from starting your case to receiving your permit is typically 6–10 weeks. Via the Spanish Embassy/Consulate in the UAE: processing typically takes 1–3+ months from submission, plus time to prepare documents. UGE is significantly faster for those who can travel to Spain. We manage the full process — you receive regular case updates through your online dashboard.
You can keep your UAE bank accounts after moving to Spain. There is no obligation to close them. However, once you become a Spanish tax resident (183+ days in Spain), you must declare any overseas financial accounts exceeding €50,000 in total value using Spain's Modelo 720 annual declaration. Failure to file Modelo 720 carries very significant penalties. Your UAE salary can continue to be paid into your UAE account — many UAE expats in Spain keep UAE accounts for convenience. A Spanish bank account is typically needed for local expenses, rental contracts, and direct debits in Spain.
Yes. The Consulate General of Spain in Dubai handles DNV applications for UAE residents in Dubai and the northern Emirates. The Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi serves applicants in Abu Dhabi and the western UAE. Both handle the full DNV application process. We also have a dedicated page covering applying from Dubai specifically, including the Dubai consulate address and what to expect.
Barcelona and Madrid are the most popular destinations for UAE-based expats applying for the DNV, followed by Málaga, Valencia, and Seville. Barcelona offers strong connectivity to the UAE (direct flights with Emirates and Etihad), a large international community, and a Mediterranean lifestyle that many UAE expats find familiar. Madrid suits those who need frequent travel across Europe. Málaga has become a major digital nomad hub and has a lower cost of living than Madrid or Barcelona. Your choice of Spanish city does not affect your DNV application — the visa is national, not city-specific.
