DNV renewal
When your 3-year DNV expires — renewing is straightforward
If you have maintained the conditions under which your permit was granted, renewal is a natural next step. You can apply from 60 days before your current permit expires — and each renewal extends your path to permanent residency in Spain.
Your DNV timeline
From initial permit to permanent residency
The DNV is not just a 3-year permit — it is a pathway to long-term legal status in Spain. Here is how the full timeline unfolds.
Initial DNV permit — 3 years
Granted on approval via UGE or consulate. Valid for 3 years from the date of issue. During this period you must maintain the original qualifying conditions: income threshold, non-Spanish income sources, legal residence, and valid health insurance.
Year 0–3Apply for renewal — from 60 days before expiry
Do not leave renewal to the last moment. Apply from 60 days before your permit expires to ensure continuity of legal status. We handle the full renewal submission — same process as the original application, with updated documentation.
Year 2.5 onwardsFirst renewal — 2 years
On approval, your first renewal gives you a 2-year permit. You now have 5 years of total continuous legal residence in Spain — the threshold for long-term EU residency. Same income and conditions apply throughout.
Year 3–5Long-term EU residency eligible — year 5
After 5 years of continuous legal residence in Spain (which your DNV periods count towards in full), you are eligible to apply for residencia de larga duración — long-term EU residency. This gives you more stable rights and is not tied to maintaining the DNV income conditions.
Year 5Second renewal — 2 more years
If you have not applied for long-term residency or prefer to continue on the DNV, a second renewal gives another 2-year permit — 7 years total. At any point during this period you may apply for long-term residency if not already granted.
Year 5–7Spanish nationality eligible — year 10
After 10 years of continuous legal residence, you may apply for Spanish nationality (citizenship). For nationals of Latin American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, or Sephardic Jews, the residence requirement is reduced to 2 years.
Year 10 (or year 2 for qualifying nationals)Renewal requirements
What you need to demonstrate at renewal
Renewal is not automatic — you must show that you have maintained the conditions under which the permit was originally granted. These are the key requirements the authority will assess.
Income still at or above €2,849/month
The income threshold applies at renewal as it did at the original application — currently €2,849/month (200% SMI 2026). Note that the SMI is reviewed annually, so the applicable figure at renewal may differ from the original threshold. Your case manager will confirm the current figure when you begin renewal.
Still primarily working for non-Spanish clients
The same 20% Spanish income rule applies. For self-employed applicants, no more than 20% of income should have come from Spanish clients during the permit period. Employed applicants must still be working for a non-Spanish employer.
Still legally residing in Spain
You must demonstrate continued residence — a rental contract or property ownership, and a current padron certificate (certificate of registration at your local council). The padron is essential and must be up to date.
Valid health insurance or continued RETA registration
If you are employed, you must still hold a qualifying private health insurance policy. If you are self-employed and registered with RETA (Spain's self-employed social security), continued RETA registration may satisfy the health insurance requirement.
Clean criminal record
An updated criminal record certificate is required at renewal — from Spain and from any country where you have resided for 5 or more years since the original application. The certificate must be current (issued within 3 months), apostilled, and sworn-translated if not in Spanish.
No visa condition violations
You must not have breached any condition of your original DNV during the permit period. This includes not working for a Spanish employer without authorisation and maintaining continuous legal residence.
The bigger picture
Your path to permanent residency in Spain
Every year spent legally in Spain on the DNV counts towards your 5-year long-term residency threshold. Here is how the years add up.
Initial DNV
First permit, issued on approval. Full legal residence and work rights.
Long-term EU residency
After 5 continuous years. Residencia de larga duración — not tied to DNV income conditions.
Second renewal
If continuing on DNV rather than moving to long-term residency.
Spanish nationality
Full citizenship eligible after 10 years (2 years for qualifying nationalities).
Accelerated citizenship for qualifying nationals
Nationals of Latin American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, or Sephardic Jews can apply for Spanish nationality after just 2 years of legal residence — not 10. If you are from any of these countries, your path to citizenship is considerably shorter than for other nationalities.
