Applying for Spain's DNV from Abu Dhabi — Embassy route or UGE from Spain

Abu Dhabi residents have two routes to Spain's Digital Nomad Visa: the Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi (Khalidiyah) or the UGE route via Etihad direct to Madrid. Both are fully supported. This guide covers the Embassy address, jurisdiction vs Dubai, ADGM applicants, and UAE-to-Spain tax planning.

Spanish Embassy Abu Dhabi vs Consulate General Dubai — which one is yours?

The UAE has two Spanish diplomatic posts. Which one handles your application depends on which emirate you reside in. Understanding this distinction upfront saves time and avoids misdirected applications.

Spanish Embassy Abu Dhabi

Serves Abu Dhabi emirate, Al Ain & western UAE

The Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi — located at Villa 33, Al Mutanabi Street, Khalidiyah — is a full Embassy (ambassador-level), not just a consulate. It has broader authority and serves all DNV applications from residents of Abu Dhabi emirate (including Al Ain and the Al Dhafra western regions). This is a higher-level diplomatic post than the Dubai consulate — both handle the full DNV application process.

Spanish Consulate General Dubai

Serves Dubai and the northern Emirates

The Spanish Consulate General in Dubai handles DNV applications for residents of Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah. If you reside in Dubai but work in Abu Dhabi (common for ADGM, government, or oil sector workers), you use the post covering your residence emirate — not where you work. A Dubai resident applies in Dubai, even if their office is in Abu Dhabi. See our Dubai guide for the Dubai consulate details.

💡

Don't know which post covers you?

The rule is simple: the Spanish diplomatic post covering your emirate of residence handles your application. Abu Dhabi emirate (including Al Ain) → Spanish Embassy Abu Dhabi. Dubai or northern Emirates → Consulate General Dubai. If you are unsure, contact us and your case manager will confirm based on your residency details.

Who applies for Spain's DNV from Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi's economy is concentrated in government, oil and gas (ADNOC and the energy sector), finance (ADGM financial district), defence, healthcare, and real estate. Many Abu Dhabi professionals earn well above the €2,849/month DNV threshold — and are increasingly drawn to Spain's combination of Mediterranean lifestyle, EU residency rights, and stable long-term immigration pathway.

Oil & gas sector

ADNOC and energy sector professionals

Abu Dhabi's oil and gas sector employs thousands of expatriates in technical, engineering, and management roles. Many are on employment contracts with ADNOC subsidiaries or international energy companies. If your role is remotely feasible (consulting, technical advisory, project management, finance), you may qualify for the DNV. The 20% rule (no more than 20% Spanish-source income) is important — energy sector work for Abu Dhabi-based companies is clearly non-Spanish income.

ADGM financial district

Finance and professional services — ADGM applicants

The Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) is a common law international financial centre on Al Maryah Island. ADGM-registered companies use English-language employment contracts and internationally recognised corporate governance frameworks. For Spanish DNV applications, ADGM employment letters are clear and straightforward income evidence. ADGM income is non-Spanish income — ideal for the 20% rule compliance. Many ADGM professionals in banking, asset management, legal, and fintech are strong DNV candidates.

Government and consultancy

Government sector and independent consultants

Abu Dhabi's large government sector (federal and emirate-level) employs many expatriate professionals in advisory, technology, healthcare, and education roles. Independent consultants and freelancers working for Abu Dhabi government entities or international organisations need to ensure their work structure qualifies — the DNV requires self-employment income (autónomo) or employment contract structure, and the 20% Spanish-source cap must be observed.

UGE from Spain via Etihad or Spanish Embassy Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi residents have excellent UGE route access — Etihad Airways flies direct from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) to Madrid in approximately 7 hours, and from AUH to Barcelona via connections. For most passport holders in Abu Dhabi, the UGE route is the faster choice.

From 0% UAE income tax to Spanish IRPF — plan this carefully

Moving from Abu Dhabi to Spain is one of the most dramatic income tax transitions possible — from zero personal income tax to Spanish rates of up to 47%. This is the single most important financial consideration for Abu Dhabi residents considering the DNV. Model it carefully before committing to the move.

UAE side

No UAE income tax — zero double taxation issue from UAE

The UAE has no personal income tax. Abu Dhabi residents currently pay zero tax on employment or self-employment income. This means there is no UAE-side double taxation issue — there is no UAE income tax to credit against Spanish IRPF. The entire tax change occurs on the Spanish side. You go from paying nothing to paying Spanish rates on your worldwide income.

Spanish side

Spanish IRPF — up to 47% on high incomes

Once you have been in Spain for 183 days in a calendar year, you become a Spanish tax resident and must file IRPF returns on your worldwide income. Spanish income tax is progressive: approximately 19% on the first €12,450, rising to 47% on income above €300,000. For Abu Dhabi professionals on high salaries, this is a very significant change that requires careful financial planning before the move.

💡

Beckham Law — the key tax tool for Abu Dhabi expats moving to Spain

Spain's Beckham Law (Régimen de Impatriados) allows qualifying employed workers moving to Spain to pay a flat 24% tax rate on income up to €600,000, instead of progressive IRPF rates. For Abu Dhabi professionals on employment contracts, this can substantially reduce the effective tax rate. You must apply within 6 months of registering with Social Security in Spain and must not have been Spanish tax resident in the preceding 5 years. Beckham Law is a separate service from the DNV — consult a Spanish tax adviser. Self-employed individuals generally do not qualify.

UAE apostille via MOFAIC and criminal record for Abu Dhabi applicants

Since the UAE joined the Hague Convention in 2021, UAE-issued documents can be apostilled through MOFAIC. Criminal record requirements depend on your nationality — the primary certificate is from your home country, with a UAE police clearance potentially also required.

UAE apostille — MOFAIC

UAE joined Hague Convention in 2021 — MOFAIC apostilles now available

The UAE joined the Hague Convention in 2021. Apostilles on UAE-issued documents are now issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC). You can apply online through the MOFAIC portal or in person at MOFAIC service centres in Abu Dhabi. This applies to UAE-issued documents such as salary certificates from UAE-based employers, employment contracts signed in the UAE, and UAE company letters. Pre-2021, UAE documents required a different legalisation chain — MOFAIC apostille is now the standard process.

Criminal record

Home country certificate — Abu Dhabi Police clearance may also be needed

The primary criminal record requirement is from your home country — apostilled there. UK nationals use the ACRO Police Certificate; US nationals use the FBI Identity History Summary; Canadian nationals use the RCMP check; Australian nationals use the AFP National Police Certificate. If you have been residing in Abu Dhabi for 2 or more years, an Abu Dhabi Police clearance certificate may additionally be required. Your case manager confirms the exact requirement for your nationality and application route. We manage the document preparation throughout.

Spain DNV from Abu Dhabi — FAQ

The Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi is located at Villa 33, Al Mutanabi Street, Khalidiyah, Abu Dhabi. This is a full Embassy (ambassador-level representation), not a consulate — it has the highest level of diplomatic authority and handles full DNV applications. In-person appointments are required. Contact the Embassy directly or via the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for current appointment procedures.
The Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi serves residents in Abu Dhabi emirate, Al Ain, and the western regions of the UAE. The Spanish Consulate General in Dubai serves residents in Dubai and the northern emirates (Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah). Your jurisdiction is determined by your emirate of residence. If you reside in Abu Dhabi but frequently commute to Dubai, you use the Abu Dhabi Embassy. If you reside in Dubai, you use the Dubai Consulate.
Yes — if your passport has Schengen visa-free access. Many Abu Dhabi residents hold UK, US, Canadian, Australian, or other Schengen visa-free passports and can fly from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) to Spain and apply via the UGE. Etihad Airways operates direct flights from AUH to Madrid (approximately 7 hours), making this convenient. The UGE route is significantly faster than the Embassy route — approximately 20 working days versus 1–3 months via the Embassy.
The Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi requires the standard DNV document set: national passport (valid for at least 1 year beyond the application), criminal record certificate from your home country (apostilled), private health insurance for Spain (no co-payment, minimum €30,000 coverage), proof of income (bank statements, payslips, employer letter), employment contract or proof of self-employment, proof of residence in Abu Dhabi, completed application forms, and passport photos. Additional documents may be required — the Embassy's specific checklist takes precedence. We prepare and verify your complete document pack.
The Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi typically processes DNV applications in 1–3 months from submission date, though processing times can vary depending on application volumes and individual case complexity. This is significantly slower than the UGE route (approximately 20 working days). If you hold a Schengen visa-free passport and can travel to Spain, the UGE route is the faster option.
Working in the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) financial free zone does not disqualify you from the DNV, but it does not provide any special advantage either. ADGM employment contracts are typically in English and internationally recognised, which makes them clear and straightforward income evidence for the DNV application. Your employer letter on ADGM letterhead confirms your remote working arrangement. Note that to qualify for the DNV, no more than 20% of your income should come from Spanish clients — if your ADGM employer has Spanish operations, confirm the income source structure.
The UAE joined the Hague Convention in 2021, so UAE-issued documents can now be apostilled. Apostilles are issued through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC). Applications can be made online through the MOFAIC portal or in person at MOFAIC service centres in Abu Dhabi. Applicable documents include UAE-issued salary certificates, employment contracts, and company letters. The apostille confirms the authenticity of the UAE official who issued the document.
For most Abu Dhabi residents, the primary criminal record requirement is a certificate from your home country (country of nationality), apostilled there. For UK nationals: ACRO Police Certificate with UK apostille. For US nationals: FBI Identity History Summary with US apostille. For other nationalities, the equivalent from your home country. If you have been residing in the UAE for 2 or more years, a UAE police clearance certificate from Abu Dhabi Police may also be requested. Your case manager will confirm the exact requirement for your nationality and application route.
If you are applying as an employed worker, you need a Spanish private health insurance policy covering Spain — not a UAE or international policy. The policy must have no co-payment (no excess or deductible) and minimum coverage of €30,000. Abu Dhabi's mandatory health insurance (Daman or equivalent) does not qualify — you need a Spain-specific policy. If you are self-employed and registering as autónomo in Spain, you are covered by Spain's public health system via RETA (Social Security) contributions and do not need a separate private policy. Our partner 247 Expat Insurance can arrange a qualifying policy.
Yes. UAE nationals (Emirati passport holders) can apply for Spain's Digital Nomad Visa. UAE national passports have Schengen visa-free access, so Emirati applicants can use the UGE route by entering Spain and applying locally. Alternatively, they can apply via the Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi using the standard consulate route. The same income, employment, and document requirements apply — the income minimum is €2,849/month from remote work predominantly for non-Spanish clients.
Yes. Spouse or partner and dependent children can be included in the DNV application. Each additional family member increases the income threshold by approximately €1,069/month (75% of SMI 2026). A couple needs approximately €3,918/month; a family of three approximately €4,987/month; a family of four approximately €6,056/month. Each family member also requires their own health insurance policy, criminal record certificate (if adult), and apostilled documents. The Abu Dhabi Embassy processes family applications together.
Barcelona is consistently the most popular destination for Abu Dhabi expats moving on the DNV, with strong direct flight connections (Etihad via Abu Dhabi, several oneworld connections), a large international community, Mediterranean climate, and a lifestyle that many UAE expats find appealing. Madrid is preferred by those who prioritise business connectivity and regular European travel. Málaga has become a major destination for UAE expats seeking a more relaxed pace, excellent weather, and lower living costs than Barcelona. Valencia and Seville also attract Abu Dhabi expats.
