When should you start your renewal?

Spanish immigration law allows you to submit a renewal up to 90 days before your permit expires. Do not leave it until the last minute — document collection and preparation take time, and a lapsed permit is a serious complication.

Days before expiry

Open your renewal case — ideal window

90 days out is the ideal moment to open your renewal dashboard case. This gives you comfortable time to gather updated documents, resolve any queries, and submit well ahead of expiry with no pressure.

Days before expiry

Latest comfortable start point

60 days is the minimum comfortable window. Document preparation typically takes 1–2 weeks; submission and processing around 20 working days. Starting here leaves little buffer for unexpected delays.

Days before expiry

Submitted — awaiting decision

If you submitted before expiry, you remain in legal status while your renewal is pending — even if the decision comes after your current permit date. This is known as prórroga de estancia.

Expiry date

Do not let this pass without submitting

If your permit lapses without a submitted renewal, you may be out of legal status. Recovery is possible but significantly more complex and costly. Contact us immediately if you are approaching expiry without a renewal in progress.

Approaching your expiry date?

What do you need to renew your Spain DNV?

The renewal requirements broadly mirror the original application — you must still meet the core eligibility criteria and demonstrate ongoing remote working activity. Here is what our team will check and prepare.

Continued income — €2,849/month minimum

You must still demonstrate at least €2,849/month (200% of the 2026 SMI) from remote work. Recent payslips or invoices covering the previous 3 months are required.

Updated employment or client contract

An updated employment contract (remote employees) or current client invoices and contracts (freelancers/autónomos) confirming your continued remote working arrangement.

Proof of residence in Spain

Evidence that you have been residing in Spain during your permit period — typically a rental or purchase contract, utility bills, or padrón municipal certificate.

Clean criminal record

An updated criminal record certificate from your home country, apostilled. This must typically be issued within 3 months of your renewal submission date.

Private health insurance (if employed)

Updated proof of valid, Spain-compliant health insurance coverage. We recommend spanish-healthinsurance.com or 247expatinsurance.com.

Valid passport

Your passport must be valid for the duration of the renewal period. If your passport is due to expire, renew it before starting the visa renewal process.

Family member renewals

Dependent family members included in your original application must also renew at the same time. The primary applicant's income must still meet the combined threshold: €2,849 base + approximately €1,068 for a spouse + €356 per child. A family discount applies on our renewal fee. See family pricing →

Everything included in your renewal

The same end-to-end managed service as your original application — updated documents, renewed permit, no complications.

Full renewal preparation & submission

Our Platinum Legal Spain immigration team prepares all renewal forms, compiles your updated document file, and submits your complete renewal application on your behalf.

Official sworn translations — up to the value of €100

Updated criminal records and other key documents requiring certified Spanish translation are included up to the value of €100 in the renewal fee.

24/7 dashboard & document portal

Log in to your renewal dashboard any time to upload updated documents, track your case progress, and receive requests directly from your case handler.

Document review & gap check

Before submission, your full renewal file is reviewed by our team. We identify any missing or expired documents and flag them before they cause a rejection.

Updated TIE guidance

Once your renewal is approved, your TIE (residency card) needs to be updated. We walk you through what to bring and how to book the appointment at your local comisaría.

Staged payment — final fee on approval only

€400 to start your renewal case. The remaining €599 is only charged once your renewal is officially approved. You never pay the full amount upfront.

Health Insurance

Updated private health insurance is a renewal requirement for employed applicants. We recommend spanish-healthinsurance.com or 247expatinsurance.com.

TIE Appointment

You book your updated TIE card appointment directly at your local comisaría. We provide full guidance on the process once your renewal is approved.

Additional Sworn Translations

Translations up to the value of €100 are included. Documents requiring translation beyond that value are costed separately.

Beckham Law Registration

If you haven't yet registered for Spain's 24% flat tax regime, this is a separate post-approval service. Ask us about it once your renewal is confirmed.

Two stages — final payment only on approval

Renewing is simpler and less expensive than a new application. Two stages, no large upfront cost, and you only pay the majority when you're approved.

Renewals handled smoothly

★★★★★

"My original application was handled brilliantly so I came back for the renewal without a second thought. The dashboard prompted me to start 90 days out, made it clear what new documents were needed, and the whole thing was done well before my permit expired."

Tom H.

Product Manager, UK — Madrid, now on 2nd renewal

★★★★★

"I was nervous about the renewal — I'd changed freelance clients since my original application and wasn't sure if my new contracts would be accepted. The team reviewed everything before submission, flagged exactly what needed updating, and it went through without a hitch."

Ana N.

Freelance Writer, Canada — Seville

★★★★★

"We renewed as a family of three — my wife and I plus our daughter. The team handled all three applications together through the dashboard. Having everyone's documents in one place and one team managing the whole case made what could have been a stressful process genuinely straightforward."

Renewal — frequently asked questions

We recommend opening your renewal case at least 90 days before your current permit expires. 60 days is the minimum comfortable window given that document preparation takes 1–2 weeks and processing typically takes around 20 working days. Starting early removes all pressure and ensures you are never at risk of a gap in your legal status.
You will need updated versions of the key documents from your original application: a valid passport, recent payslips or invoices (3 months) confirming income of at least €2,849/month, an updated employment contract or client agreements, a fresh criminal record certificate (apostilled, typically issued within 3 months of submission), proof of residence in Spain, and proof of current health insurance coverage (employed applicants). We provide a personalised checklist inside the dashboard when you open your case.
Our renewal service for one adult is €999 total, paid in two stages: €400 to open your renewal case and €599 only when your renewal is approved. Official sworn translations up to the value of €100 are included. Family member renewals are available at a discounted rate — see the full pricing page.
Each renewal grants a further 2 years of legal residence in Spain. After your initial permit expires, renewals of 2 years each take you toward 5 years of continuous residence — at which point you can apply for long-term permanent residency, which carries no further renewal requirement.
Provided you submitted your renewal application before your permit expired, you remain in legal residence status while the decision is pending — this is known as prórroga de estancia. However, if your permit lapses entirely without a submitted renewal, you may fall out of legal status. This is why we strongly advise starting at least 60 days before expiry. If you are close to your expiry date without a renewal in progress, contact us immediately.
Yes — changing employer or clients does not disqualify you from renewal, as long as you still meet the core requirements: remote work for non-Spanish companies or clients, and income of at least €2,849/month. You will need to provide updated contracts and payslips or invoices reflecting your current situation. Our team reviews these before submission to ensure everything is in order.
Yes. Dependent family members who were included in the original application renew simultaneously through the same dashboard case. The primary applicant must still meet the combined income threshold for all family members. A family discount applies on the renewal fee. See the pricing page for exact family rates.
DNV renewals are submitted through the UGE in Spain, so you will need to be in Spain at the time of submission (or be able to travel back before your current permit expires). Most of the document preparation can be done remotely through the dashboard from wherever you are. We will confirm what in-person steps are needed when you open your case.
